In general, I admire anyone who uses their skills, talents and energies to do some good in the world. One of the most admirable people I ever met was a lady who did home care for people with special needs, and her particular talent was sitting with people who were so troubled that they were on a suicide watch.
I have accepted that I will never be able to do anything that directly helpful, but I’ve always tried my best in my own small way, currently as a transcriber with a wide range of knowledge and a very sensitive ear that allows me to faithfully record people’s speech in writing.
I admire all the customer service agents, cashiers and tellers and waiters, who patiently serve with very little reward and often no recognition or even get outright abuse from customers. I admire the cleaners who, again, do necessary work for minimal compensation and get treated like they’re dirt themselves, if they’re noticed at all.
And I admire the volunteers who run service organizations who do the work that rescues the vulnerable ones, both human and more-than-human, who can’t fight their way to the front of the line. There’s people in my city who rescue turtles that have been run over and birds that have been poisoned and dogs that have been abandoned. Some days I just need to be reminded that humans can do good things too
